Storyboarding and Animatic Design for Sinnwerkstatt!

I just recently received work from the Sinnwerkstatt in Berlin, Germany. Just to give you a bit of background; 'Werkstatt' means "workshop" in English. And 'Sinn' means "sense" or "meaning." Together it means "workshop of sense or meaning". It is a media production agency that is dedicated to supporting ethical and social organizations. The studio has a list of strict guidelines which determines who and what they want to produce media for. So NGOs, Non-profits, and other social organizations can submit themselves with a project/intent to us and then the Sinnwerkstatt decides together who they want to work for according to these standards. I think it is a really interesting way to do business. It is totally the opposite of what we creatives are used to. Usually it is the big companies that hire smaller ones to do work for them...or a small start-up will hire interns or freelancers...but now the media producer can choose who, in a sense, deserves support. It carries with it an awareness of art's role in society...to show the world as changing.

As someone who works at the Sinnwerkstatt I feel like I actually have an interest in the work that I do. It allows me to come up with fresh new ideas that can make a potential difference in the world around me. Now I can work in a way where I choose who and what I want to support directly....and help to make it better through my creativity.
Right now I am doing a 5 minute infomercial for Stiftung Weltbevölkerung (Foundation for the World), an organization dedicated to sexual education and women's liberation in Africa. They want to communicate the problems of sex and population booms due to rape in the countries south of the Sahara. I feel like it is an interesting project that is worth sharing with you.

In the post you will see a plant with three leaves which symbolizes the youth of the nation. The plant grows throughout the video to show that the youth can flourish if under the right conditions.
I have posted some storyboard ideas for the animation video to show. I have here some sketches, style sheets, and also some final storyboards. This is  so you can see the process of what it takes to create such an animation. I alone am responsible for the look, feel, concept, action, and timing of the short film....from visual design and illustration to motion graphics and animation.

The short animation will use the growth of a plant as a symbol for the youth of Africa. If we nourish and cater to their needs then they can flourish in their own beautiful way.

These icons will be used to visually communicate key points throughout the video describing the current conditions of Africa's young population and solutions to be offered regarding education and potential future.

This cute little plant will be the holder of information which will later blossom flowers!

Here is a style sheet for the colors and mood proposal. In the end, the 4th image suited best.

"Sense"

And here are some storyboards for the beginning sequence.

This is the proposed ending logo sequence which zooms out of a garden scene with a woman and her child playing under the tree.

When there is an idea which is difficult to communicate than it is important to illustrate many different options to find what is best.

Some of them turn out morbid...some of them turn out cute! All is ok for the process!

I hope this post can give you an idea of the project nicely. I also hope that this can benefit some people like me who are looking to present themselves in a professional way but still do work they love.

Have a great life!

Remember this.

"In a decaying society, art, if it is truthful, must also reflect decay. And unless it wants to break faith with its social function, art must show the world as changeable. And help to change it."

Metatron House Design WIP

This is a work in progress house design. It is inspired by the metatron's cube and the flower of life geometry. I hope for this to be built someday somewhere on the country side. It will be a 6 meter diameter room with the possibility to add rooms from the hexagonal foundation. The pyramid form of the glass roof will provide an excellent view of the stars!

I am really trying to focus on the craftsmanship of the bau. Detail and attention is the key to this model. Later I will use it to refer angles and cut lengths so that it can be produced quickly and efficiently.

You can see the model evolve over time. I'll post more photos as it develops.

Portfolio Preparation for King.com

I was given an assignment as an applicant for King.com. It was really a great process and outcome I think and I hope to show some of it to you on this blog.

The assignment was to redesign an old game they developed back in their earlier years.  They asked to include sketches of a new theme, logo, in-game elements, and a nice character. The game was called Silver Screen and you can play it here if you are interested.

The old design inspired a few new ideas that proved successful. I hope it is communicated well through these pages. I included everything from original design sketches to as close to final product as I could considering the time frame. Enjoy!

Moments with Iceman Cartoon Process

Character and Background development
Hello All! Here is a sneak peak of the process for creating the IceGod/IceMan Animatic for Revolution Productions in Berlin. As some background, this assignment was given to me as a test to show mouth movements, quality of animating expressions, voice over, sound, and story. Also, Revolution Productions is known for their whiteboard style which I tried to replicate in this video.
Storyboard and Animatic decisions
As illustrated in this photo, the story is about the "Iceman" who lives in his cave. He's playing video games and drinking soda which is interrupted by a phone call from an angry man. He is accused of something but the Iceman does not understand him. So he hangs up the phone and goes back to playing his video games. That's it!

Like I said, this is just a short clip to show what is possible with After Effects to do white board style animation. I hope you like it! As it was very fun to create!

The full animated sketch can be seen on my youtube here

Have a great day! Hopefully this helps someone out there prepare a test to get a job somewhere. It is super important to show process I think because it gives people context and awareness of your professionalism.

Thanks again!

Bye!

Animating at Hard Hob Studios in Berlin!

This is an animated show to a live band based in Berlin. It's a full feature film about a robot who is on a search for a new heart. It takes place in a post apocalyptic Berlin state where Deco4, a robot with an erased memory, has a lot to discover about the past, present, and future.

It is currently running on an indiegogo campaign found here! If you like the project, share it or support it! Funding ends on December 20, 2013!

The Arche Metropolis Academy for Awareness!

I am very excited to have designed this flier for Werkstadtt N in Pulsraum Berlin.

Thanks to Werkstadtt N Projekt and Arche Metropolis we have a very fun and educational day ahead! On September 14 the Summer Academy will be hosting a variety of workshops on green economic, eco-political, and urban alternative issues. Hopefully you all can come out for a nice day in the sun (hopefully)!

Bamboo Yurt Construction Workshop

Door construction with hardwood and glass.

Foundation assembly structure design without metal nails.

Foundation complete! Time to assemble the Bamboo Yurt!

Extremely light! Only two people to carry it. The tribe raises the center circle together.

Sleeping in American style Tipis
This was a workshop we attended from April 1 - April 7. We completed one bamboo yurt with the fabric skin sewn together. We also used hemp insulation for the walls and a wood burning stove to keep it warm during the winter time. As you can see in the photos we built this while it was still cold enough for snow. This workshop was an action to provide a tribe with nomadic natural housing and a chance to live together!
